"Just because I don’t always listen doesn’t mean I can't hear you."
Breed Profile
The American Water Spaniel is a small dog with a big spirit. They are tough in the field, yet want nothing more than to cuddle with you at home, but only after they've had plenty of exercise. They can be stubborn, but with patient owners, the American Water Spaniel makes a great family dog.

Behavior

The American Water Spaniel loves people and just wants to be near you and your family. They love children and can be very protective of them, which is ideal if you’re looking for a watchdog. But don't let your American Water Spaniel think they’re in charge... or they will be. American Water Spaniels can be aggressive toward other dogs, and you will know by their loud outside voice if something has sparked their curiosity. They can be slightly sensitive, so use positive reinforcement and a gentle approach when training.

Coat

When you pet your American Water Spaniel, you’ll feel that their coats are dense and slightly oily. This is because they have a thick, double coat that keeps them warm when they’re playing in the water or retrieving game. The hair length is usually medium or long, depending on how often they are trimmed. You’ll want to brush your American Water Spaniel at least 2-3 times every week to keep the hair from getting too gnarly. Routine grooming is also a good way to remove any burrs or other fun things hitchhiking on your dog.

Lifestyle

American Water Spaniels are happiest when they are spending time with their families. If you have children and/or plenty of time to spend with your dog, the American Water Spaniel is a good fit. They tend to prefer a spacious home with a larger yard so they can get outside and run around until they’re ready to come back in for a cuddle.

Activity

Did someone say walk? With the American Water Spaniel, it’s more like run, sprint, swim, sprint, run. A happy American Water Spaniel is one that gets a daily dose of exercise and then gets to relax with the fam. Hunting, swimming , and frisbee are all great ways you can help your American Water Spaniel burn off some of their seemingly never-ending supply of energy.
