Begamascos are very smart, but they have a stubborn streak. They respond best to positive reinforcement and will look to you as their leader, trainer, and friend.

Bergamascos have typical sheepdog coats made of multiple types of hair that mat together. Grooming may seem like a nightmare, but it’s actually easier than expected. They need brushing to remove dirt and trimming to keep their coat from getting in the way. Make sure not to cut your Bergamasco’s hair too short or shave it because their coat is their primary source of protection. These dogs don’t need to be bathed often, but when they do, just use water and expect a pungent wooly smell.

Despite their size, Bergamascos are actually quite gentle and patient with kids, dogs, and other animals. They grow particularly attached to children and consider themselves the protector. These dogs may be scared or wary of new people and activities, but socialization can help them feel more comfortable. Bergamascos enjoy playing outside, but their primary home should be indoors, where they can escape the elements and be near their families.

Bergamascos may be big dogs, but they don’t need much activity. A long walk or extensive play time in the yard will keep them happy and healthy. If your Bergamasco shows an interest in more exercise or seems restless, try sports like agility, rally, and hiking to get their blood pumping.
