Berger des Pyrenees

Breed Group: herding
"I’m a sweet but stubborn pup who just wants to keep you safe!"
Breed Profile
The Berger des Pyrenees is a French herding dog that’s known as the Pyrenean Shepherd outside of France. This breed makes a great guard dog and activity partner. They need plenty of exercise and training to curb their bad habits, but they’ll keep you safe no matter what.

Behavior

The Berger des Pyrenees’ personality varies based on their heredity, surroundings, and lifestyle. In general, they tend to be an intelligent breed known for their guard dog talents. They’ll bark at anything and do whatever it takes to keep their family and home safe, so the Berger des Pyrenees need an owner who has the patience for training and socializing them so they can learn right from wrong.

Coat

This breed has a double coat in a variety of lengths. The “smooth-haired” Pyre has short hair on its face, longer coat on the body, and tufts of hair on the back of each leg and bottom of the tail. This coat type doesn’t require much grooming. The “demi long” Pyre’s body has long fur on its body and medium-length hair on its fair. The “rough-faced” variety has longer hair all over its body. The “demi long” and “rough-faced” Pyres should be brushed a few times each week to manage shedding and prevent cording.

Lifestyle

The Berger des Pyrenees is an adaptable dog that can live in apartments or homes as long as they get enough mental and physical exercise. They need to live with families who are home a lot, as they get bored easily and may get into trouble. These dogs can live in homes with children, dogs, and cats, and over time, they often become the family protector. However, they have a high prey drive and may try to herd children and other animals, so a bit of training will be needed to show them how to play nicely.

Activity

The Berger des Pyrenees is a high-energy breed that needs heavy exercise to stay happy and healthy. These dogs like walking, hiking, swimming, playing fetch, and any activity that keeps their mind and body busy. Pyres learn quickly, especially as puppies, so the more new things you can introduce them to, the happier they’ll be.
