Bouvier des Ardennes

Breed Group: herding
"I’m a hardy, herding dog!"
Breed Profile
If the Bouvier des Ardennes could herd animals on the farm all day, it would be one happy dog. This rugged breed is the perfect protector for families with livestock. They need extra TLC with grooming and exercise, but they’ll be glad to keep you safe in return.

Behavior

The Bouvier des Ardennes is a playful, curious, and energetic dog. They are social and loving with their families but brave and assertive when it comes to protecting them. These dogs can adapt to be family pets, but they’re happiest when they get to pursue their favorite activities: herding livestock and standing guard.

Coat

The Bouvier des Ardennes has a double coat with coarse hair on top to protect them from the elements and dense fur underneath to keep it warm. They often have a beard, mustache, and eyebrows that make them look particularly expressive. This breed comes in several colors, with grey, black, and fawn being the most common. Their coat is long, so it needs to be brushed regularly to remove tangles.

Lifestyle

These dogs are in full guardian mode around children and other dogs in the family. However, they may try to herd cats and other animals instead of making friends. The Bouvier des Ardennes is a rugged dog that can live inside or outside (as long as the weather isn’t too extreme), but they prefer to be in a home with a big yard so they can roam free.

Activity

The Bouvier des Ardennes has an endless appetite for activities that keep their minds and bodies busy. Whether it’s hunting in the field, going for a long walk, hiking, or running, they can never get enough. Give this dog plenty of exercise, or prepare for one bored and unhappy pup.
