Canaan Dog

Canaans are smart, calm, devoted, and willing to please. However, they also have a territorial and aggressive side that can be tough to tame. Early socialization and firm, loving training can help them overcome these bad habits. Once they know right from wrong and have warmed up to their owners, Canaans can be loving, affectionate members of the family.

The Canaan has a double coat made of a soft undercoat and straight, flat outer coat. The fur can be white with colored markings, black, brown, red, or cream - all with white markings. Canaans may have white or black masks covering their ears and eyes, as well as a white blaze between the eyes. They shed heavily once a year, so brush them weekly during non-shedding season and more often when the fur is flying.

Canaans are naturally territorial and may be aggressive toward other pets, dogs, and strangers. However, this aspect of their personality is actually a benefit when it comes to interacting with kids because they consider themselves the child’s protector. Despite their tenacity, Canaans are actually fairly small, making them a good size for an apartment or house. They also like to live indoors, where they can watch over their home and families.

Because of their working and herding background, Canaans are never content to just sit around. Long jogs, strenuous games, or herding sessions will keep these pups fit and happy. They love playing outdoors and do well with just about any sport or activity, including agility, rally, tracking, and training.
