Canadian Eskimo Dog

Breed Group: working
"Pulling sleds and takin' names!"
Breed Profile
If you live in the frozen tundra and need a worker by your side, the Canadian Eskimo may fit the bill. These sled dogs need someone to be the pack leader, but if you can keep them active and under control, they'll go to great lengths to protect you.

Behavior

The Canadian Eskimo is a hunter, worker, and protector. They bond quickly with their families and consider themselves their loyal guardian. Although they’re devoted to their owners, these dogs are not particularly affectionate. They would rather spend the day watching over the house, “talking,” and doing work in the yard.

Coat

Canadian Eskimos have long, thick double coats. They’re usually solid white or white with red, grey, brown, or black markings. Their long hair sheds heavily, especially when the seasons change. When it’s not shedding season, though, the Canadian Eskimo is fairly low maintenance when it comes to grooming.

Lifestyle

The Canadian Eskimo is a rugged dog that’s used to being outside in the extreme cold and working for hours in the snow. They should live in colder climates and have a home with plenty of acreage and high fences. This breed craves being part of a pack, so they loves having family and other dogs around. They’re usually fine with children when raised together, but they need firm training and socialization to curb their dominance and hunting instincts. Even when properly trained, Canadian Eskimos should be kept away from cats and small critters that set off its prey drive.

Activity

Canadian Eskimos are driven to explore and roam. They have a lot of energy and could run for hours, especially if they’re pulling a sled or working hard. This breed is a known escape artist, so make sure you keep them on a leash or in a fenced area to prevent them from running off.
