Cesky Terrier
Breed Group: terrier
"This little body can barely hold all my energy!"
Breed Profile
The Cesky Terrier has the personality traits of their Scottish Terrier and Sealyham Terrier grandparents in a smaller body. They need lots of attention and exercise, and they prefer not to be alone. Prepare for a pup that’s attached to your hip but looks out for you no matter what.
Behavior
The Cesky Terrier is easygoing, yet lively and stubborn at times. They enjoy playing, digging, and hunting anything that roams around the yard. Ceskies love people and hate being left alone for long periods of time. When they get lonely or bored, they’re known to bark incessantly until they get attention or have something else to do. Like many Terriers, the Cesky is alert and cautious around strangers, making them great watchdogs in addition to companions.
Coat
Ceskies have long, silky, wavy coats. Puppies are usually black, brown, or black and tan, and their color changes as they mature. By the time they reach two- or three-years-old, their fur will be a shade of gray or charcoal. Cesky Terriers have high-maintenance grooming needs. They need to be brushed at least a few times each week and trimmed every month or two. This dog’s beard can grow long and get messy, so be sure to give them a little extra TLC during your grooming sessions.
Lifestyle
Cesky Terriers love being around people, but they require training and socialization to behave well around strangers, kids, and other animals. They may be wary around visitors, so they’ll need a bit of coaxing and reassurance to warm up to them. Ceskies are the right size for apartments, but their high energy and barking make them a better fit for house life. Wherever your pup lives, be sure he or she is around people, inside most of the time, and never left alone for too long without something to do.
Activity
Ceskies are energetic but prone to gaining weight when left idle, so it’s important to give them plenty of exercise. They love being active, whether talking a long walk, hike, or games that tap into their hunting instincts. The Cesky Terrier is also a master of toy destruction, so be sure to watch them around toys that could be demolished or easily swallowed.
