Chien d'Artois

Breed Group: hound
"Lookin' for a trail!"
Breed Profile
The Chien d’Artois is a strong and rare animal, whose high spirits stay elevated with a hunting trail and loving family. They are easily trained, and love plenty of outdoor activity, yet are calm and well-balanced. They are independent and ready to find the latest interesting trail.

Behavior

The Chien d’Artois is a well-balanced and calm breed, that is a loyal and brave hunter. As long as they get a large amount of exercise and activity, they will be loving and faithful. They are independent, so make sure they’re not allowed to roam free. The Chien d’Artois was bred to hunt, so they love to chase after other small, furry critters. They do well in a loving family situation, but it may not be appropriate for these dogs to be in a home with other small animals, whom they will certain look upon as prey. They need training from a strong owner and require daily walks and exercise, or else they may become problematic.

Coat

The Chien d’Artois has a short, thick, and flat coat. Their coat pattern comes in a dark fawn tri-color in large patches. Their heads are usually fawn colored, with an occasional smoky overlay. Just consistent occasional brushing and occasional baths when needed should be enough to keep these pups clean. They do well with a wipe down from a damp towel and a mild shampoo for baths.

Lifestyle

The Chien d’Artois is a fantastic hunting dog, that will certainly sniff out the most interesting deer or hare trail. But if you aren’t a hunter, these dogs will still be happy with you if you’re as active as they are. They need a yard to run and explore and won’t do as well in an apartment setting. They are calm and well-mannered as long as they’ve gotten their daily walks and/or runs. They are kind to their families and may be trained to interact well with children, but watch them around other small critters. They will probably view anything small and furry as prey.

Activity

The Chien d’Artois are bred to hunt and are naturally inclined to find and point out your prey. They are high-spirited, independent dogs who are yet fiercely loyal to their owners. Always provide your Chien d’Artois with a large fenced-in area for play because they will take off in search of an interesting scent. They need lots of daily exercise in order to avoid problematic behavior. These dogs are a great fit for those who love to run and can spend time exercising them outdoors.
