"I'll be your eyes and ears!"
Breed Profile
Cimarron Uruguayo were once problematic wild dogs but over the years, have become the National Army of Uruguay’s mascots due to their strength and tenacity. Watchdogs, herders, large game hunters, Cimarron Uruguayos are working dogs. Not commonly kept as family pets, if you do bring these dogs home, they must be with experienced dog owners and socialized early. Cimarron Uruguayos are sure to keep you safe and sound!

Behavior

Alert and protective, Cimarron Uruguayos are excellent watchdogs. These strong, smart dogs think they know best and will challenge an owner’s role in the pack. For this reason, Cimarron Uruguayos should be with experienced dog owners. These tough pooches are known to show aggression toward people, other dogs (especially those of the same sex), and small pets. This is especially true when they do not get adequate exercise. Cimarron Uruguayos are naturally suspicious of strangers and must undergo training and early socialization so they understand appropriate watchdog behavior. Cimarron Uruguayos’ muscular build and deep bark is really all it should take to scare off intruders!

Coat

When it comes to grooming, Cimarron Uruguayos are low-key dogs. Brush their coat weekly to keep them looking healthy  and reduce dead hairs you’ll find around the house. Bathe as needed.

Lifestyle

Cimarron Uruguayos can be great dogs in the right setting. They should be a solo dog or with another dog of the opposite sex and should be supervised with small animals and children. As with most breeds, limited exercise equals unhappy, defiant, and destructive behavior. Cimarron Uruguayos do not like to live in small settings, like apartments, and require sufficient outdoor space to meet their high exercise needs. Free-spirited roamers for hundreds of years, these agile dogs must be in a safely secured yard. As the owner of a Cimarron Uruguayo, you must exude confidence and strong leadership and ensure your dog has the proper environment for them to be balanced and happy!

Activity

Cimarron Uruguayos can be of great use in a rural setting, helping herd and protect livestock or hunting. Loyal, protective, and hardy, Cimarron Uruguayos are also game to follow their owners wherever they go. Take them on an arduous mountain hike or a very long run. Although they can be strong-willed and need proper social skills, some Cimarron Uruguayos have even done well in agility competitions. Generally speaking, an exercised Cimarron Uruguayo is a happy Cimarron Uruguayo!
