Czechoslovakian Vlcak

Breed Group: working
"I walk on the wild side!"
Breed Profile
The Czechoslovakian Vlcak is lively, active, and a courageous endurance breed. They are extremely loyal and are versatile in both pack settings and family life. They need firm training to learn proper authority, but they make great watchdogs and are often wary of strangers.

Behavior

Smart, independent, a bit willful, and strong, the Czechoslovakian Vlcak is a complex pack dog. They have a playful side but it won’t show itself without developing trust. These dogs need extensive training to learn appropriate behaviors, but when they do, they will be playful and cooperative. First and foremost, they need to learn who's boss right off the bat. They are natural protectors and will intrinsically be wary of strangers. These dogs are fast and have amazing stamina, so extensive daily exercise is important for a Vlcak. They possess excellent sight and sound, so they need to be watched around children, as they may chase after anything or anyone. Because of their need for the pack, these dogs hate to be alone.

Coat

The Vlcak's thick coat very closely resembles that of a wolf. Their hair usually comes in yellow-grey or silver-grey coloring, with a light mask. With their thick coats, they usually do best in colder climates. They shed heavily twice a year, so be sure you’re prepared for a lot of brushing. Their coats are waterproof and odorless, so bathing is rarely needed.

Lifestyle

If you are active and have the need for a busy pack animal to work and stand guard, this may well be the breed for you. Vlcaks need lots of activity and exercise, and they are happiest when within a pack of other Vlcaks or with their families.  They are highly territorial, independent, and lively, making them difficult for first time dog owners, small home living, or household with other dogs or children. Still, they form close bonds and are highly devoted to their masters. Ongoing training is an absolute must, and it's important that an owner train with respect, patience, and consistency.

Activity

The Czechoslovakian Vlcak is powerful and built for speed. They are fearless and courageous, so their daily activities must compliment these inborn traits. They will be happiest on rural land with a family and home to guard. Training, games, runs, and walks are important for keeping this breed content and well-behaved.
