East Siberian Laika
Breed Group: sporting
"I'll bark if you take one more step!"
Breed Profile
The East Siberian Laika is a skilled and focused hunting dog that excels at tracking game and standing guard. These active dogs make good family pets when trained, but they enjoy being outside more than anything.
Behavior
The East Siberian Laika is first and foremost a hunting dog and will be happiest when involved in some sort of outdoor pursuit. They are highly territorial and will guard their homes and families intensely. They are friendly to their human owners and loyal, but they need training to live with other animals. They will certainly go after cats and small animals unless they are taught not to. The East Siberian Laika is strong and can endure a variety of elements, making them great for highly active hunting owners.
Coat
The East Siberian Laika has a medium-long double coat with harsh guard hair and a thick and wooly undercoat. The color of their coats range from black, white, and red, to having various patterns of white, red, grey, black, brown, or brindle through their coats. They need minimal grooming though, with just occasional brushing.
Lifestyle
The East Siberian Laika has high energy and a need for being outdoors. They are happiest when they've had lots of daily exercise. For this reason, these dogs are rarely found in the city. They prefer a rural environment where they can run and hunt and play. Being also used as sled dogs, they can run and endure for hours.
Activity
The East Siberian Laika has high activity needs, including lots of daily exercise. These dogs are natural hunting dogs and when they aren't hunting, will still need to play and run for a few hours each day. They are bred strictly for hunting, so city and apartment life will not suit the East Siberian Laika well. However if you can provide the trail, the chase is on!
