English Coonhound
Breed Group: hound
"I feel the need....the need for speed!"
Breed Profile
The English Coonhound is an absolute master of smell while on the hunt for furry raccoons, squirrels, and pretty much anything other small and interesting critters. These dogs are known for being gentle and loving with their families and are highly tolerant of young children.
Behavior
The English Coonhound is intelligent as well as active, which is perfect for hunting. These talented dogs require a firm yet gentle leader who can work extensively with them, so they might not be a perfect fit for everyone. They are a fantastic family pet though, and when socialized, can get along well with other animals and small children. They have a high prey drive, so they might not get along with other small animals in the home.
Coat
The English Coonhound's coat is hard and short, and they are average shedders. Their coats may be red ticked or blue ticked, with red, white, and black around the face and neck. These dogs require a minimum amount of grooming; simply brush as needed, roughly once a week or every two weeks, and bathe only as needed.
Lifestyle
The English Coonhound is eager to please, so if this is the dog for you, you've got a best friend for life. They're extremely active dogs who are best-suited for rural life, meaning they wouldn't do well living in a city or apartment setting. The English Coonhound is gentle and tolerant when playing with children and will make a devoted family companion.
Activity
The English Coonhound is a high-energy dog that needs a vast amount of daily exercise to keep these dogs healthy, both physically and mentally. If you're not taking them hunting, agility and fetch games everyday will help keep them from being bored and destructive. They are super fast runners that will leave you in their dust if you aren't careful.
