English Foxhound

Breed Group: hound
"My voice won't quit!"
Breed Profile
The English Foxhound was bred to chase foxes over long distances, and they still have the energy to do so. These energetic dogs are affectionate and loving companions, especially for children. Their energy needs and famously loud voice make them best-suited for a rural home.

Behavior

English Foxhounds love the chase. When these dogs smell or see something exciting, look out because the chase is on. This makes it especially important to keep them on a leash if they are in an area where they might take off. When they get excited, an English Foxhound will use their outside voice to let you know something awesome is happening. They are very attached to their owners and their families, especially children, but they can range from friendly to protective when approached by strangers.

Coat

The English Foxhound’s short coat is easy to care for. A weekly brushing will help cut back on shedding and a bath every now and then will help keep them from smelling like whatever it was they recently played in.

Lifestyle

English Foxhounds are very attached to their owners and should at least be allowed in the house. Ideally, they have access to a large outdoor play area but can come back inside to live with their families. The English Foxhound’s loud voice suits them to more of a rural home where neighbors won’t complain about a dog barking right outside their window. They get along extremely well with children and can even get along with cats if they are raised together.

Activity

English Foxhounds are Olympians when it comes to exercise. They need lots of daily exercise to stay happy and out of trouble. They make great running, hiking, or even biking buddies and will probably help you push your own level of physical fitness. Of course, English Foxhounds enjoy hunting and would love to accompany you on a trip to the field where they can truly let loose.
