Epagneul de Pont-Audemer
Breed Group: sporting
"I'm a rare breed and proud of it!"
Breed Profile
This curly-headed class clown makes a playful addition to the family and is great with kids. While relaxed at home, the Epagneul de Pont-Audemer is a natural hunter and springs into action once outdoors. This medium-sized breed requires daily exercise and does best in rural environments.
Behavior
Goofy, energetic, and affectionate, the Epagneul de Pont-Audemer is an outgoing dog. They love people, including strangers, and enjoy the company of other dogs and animals. When it comes to the household bird, though, they may become a bit too friendly, as the breed naturally hunts small prey. Known for their exceptional ability to work in wet, marshy conditions, they love playing in the water and always have energy to spare.
Coat
With messy curls piled on their head, the Epagneul de Pont-Audemer has a “just-rolled-out-of-bed” kind of look. (Although, it’s much more likely that they just rolled out of a mud puddle.) Unless trekking in the adventure from the day, their coat requires low-key maintenance. A regular brushing once or twice a week should keep their thick, wooly fur in good condition. This will also help with any shedding.
Lifestyle
This hard-working dog makes a great companion to an equally active person. If you enjoy long daily runs and playing in water, you and the Epagneul de Pont-Audemer will get along swimmingly. Needless to say, this breed does not do well in confined spaces or apartment-style living. Outgoing and affectionate, the happy-go-lucky spaniel breed loves the company of friends, family, children, and other animals. Not shy in the least, they will even befriend strangers in the hopes of a good petting.
Activity
In addition to strategically scattering birds for hunters, the Epagneul de Pont-Audemer is easily trained to point and retrieve and is known for their ability to work in marshy environments. Hunting not your favorite pastime? Try throwing a ball for your spaniel to retrieve. Better yet, have them retrieve it in the water. Simply put, this hard-working breed requires daily opportunities to run and stretch their legs. With exercise needs sufficiently met, they are sure to become a homebody with you and your family at the end of a long day.
