Epagneul Francais

Breed Group: sporting
"I always make my point!"
Breed Profile
Known for their ability to stand at point and retrieve game, the Epagneul Francais makes an excellent hunting companion. They prefer an environment with lots of acreage to roam. An even-mannered breed, they bond best with those with a similar temperament.

Behavior

The Epagneul Francais breed loves companionship and is gentle with children. They enjoy being a part of a pack of humans and other animals. Sociable and outgoing, they can have separation anxiety when left alone. These dogs are not barkers, and they expect their owners not to bark at them either. Highly intelligent and trainable, they respond best to calm and consistent coaxing.

Coat

When it comes to grooming routines, these dogs are low maintenance. Their white-and-brown coat is medium length and rarely sheds. It requires brushing once a week and a bath when appropriate. Their ears are covered in silky, feathery fur and should be checked regularly for ear infections.

Lifestyle

The ideal lifestyle for the Epagneul Francais is a rural setting where they can run freely and a home where they can become a part of the pack. Whether it be children, new people, dogs, or other animals, these dogs seek companionship and affection. They are adaptable and can live in urban environments, but they require a larger home rather than an apartment. More importantly, this gentle breed does best in low-stress environments and bonds best with an active owner with a calm demeanor.

Activity

If you enjoy hunting, the Epagneul Francais makes a great companion in the water or tough terrain. As a family pet, these dogs still require daily exercise and can be content with a long daily run. One of the best retrievers you will come across, they also enjoy a good game of fetch.
