Breed Profile
One of the oldest spaniel breeds, the Epagneul Picard is a natural hunter and strong swimmer. A dedicated working companion, these dogs are able to leave business at the door and be calm, loving pets when home. Highly adaptable, Epagneul Picards can live in most settings with sufficient daily exercise.
Behavior
Epagneul Picards have a “work hard, play hard... relax harder" attitude. They know how to leave business at the door and enjoy some quality family time when home. They love their family; they love affection; and they love adding the two together. When they can make their family happy and get some well-deserved scratches behind the ears, well... life couldn't get much better for this breed. Their low-key and friendly temperament makes them a great companion for children.
Coat
You’ll recognize an Epagneul Picard by their brown and white coat, complete with flecking on the chest and sizable solid brown patches toward the back area. Their wavy coat is silky to the touch. Grooming for the Epagneul Picard requires a thorough brushing one to two times per week. As with many dogs with large, floppy ears, be sure to check for infections on a regular basis.
Lifestyle
A rural setting for the Epagneul Picard is ideal, as they are natural hunters and thrive in open spaces. If you can commit to exercising these dogs for one to two hours each day, though, they can do just fine in a city-like environment. This is unique to the Epagneul Picard and is not true for all high-energy spaniels. Determined while working, they have a pretty even-keeled temperament and enjoy being a part of the family at home. Highly sociable, playing with kids, strangers, and other animals is not an issue with these dogs.
Activity
In addition to exceptional hunting abilities, Epagneul Picards are great in the water. Something as simple as playing fetch in a lake, stream, or pool can keep these dogs occupied for hours. Or, let them doggie paddle away in the water for a bit and you’ll be sure to have a tired spaniel, smiling ear to ear. If you’d like to try out something new and fun with your Epagneul Picard, they respond well to training.
