Grand Bleu De Gascogne
Breed Group: hound
"Ah-ROOOO going to pet me???"
Breed Profile
A rare breed from France, Grand Bleu De Gascognes are smart, powerful hunters of large animals like bear and wild boar. Perhaps what is most unique about this large breed, though, is their personality. Equipped with a deep voice, these dogs are actually quite mellow, friendly, and gentle when not working – and are especially loving and adoring toward their family.
Behavior
Grand Bleu De Gascognes are outgoing and are the first to say “hello.” Although their welcome may be a little deeper than many are used to, people should not be startled, as they are very friendly. They like being around others so much that many can become unhappy when left alone, so if you don’t have the time to devote to these dogs, they might not be the best fit. As with many bored high IQ breeds, they can become destructive or loud. Grand Bleu De Gascognes also have an extended puppyhood, which is cute, but you’ll also have a very large puppy on your hands. These dogs aim to please, so training with positive reinforcement is recommended.
Coat
Grand Bleu De Gascognes are named after their beautiful blue roan coat. These dogs require a lot of bear hugs and ear scratches but not as much in the grooming department. You should give their smooth, weatherproof coat a weekly brushing to remove dead hairs and reduce shedding. Bathe only when necessary. If these dogs do get wet, though, it’s important to dab all the moisture away from their long, droopy ears. As with most hounds, they can be prone to ear infections.
Lifestyle
One of the most important things to know about the Grand Bleu De Gascogne is that you’ll need to invite them in as full members of the family. They might be the largest family member, but they might also the most loving. They require daily exercise and a good-sized backyard to mosey around, but they can also relax indoors with you. They have a pack mentality and love to have new dog friends. You should keep an eye on any large dogs with hunting instincts around smaller pets. If raised together, some of these pups can do well with cats. Overall, Grand Bleu De Gascognes like to be doing whatever you’re doing. They are loyal family dogs and patient playmates with children.
Activity
As far as hardworking hounds go, Grand Bleu De Gascognes are not the quickest on their feet, but they sure have endurance. Hunting is always a fun activity for these nosy hounds, but if that doesn’t interest you, they can also make great companions for long-distance runners. The happiest Grand Bleu De Gascognes get a few hours of exercise and then cozy up next to your feet for the rest of the day!
