Grand Gascon-Saintongeois
Breed Group: hound
"I'm a gentle giant!"
Breed Profile
Grand Gascon-Saintongeois are large scenthounds from the south of France. Extraordinary hunters and affectionate family dogs, they are a surprisingly rare breed. Grand Gascon-Saintongeois are even-mannered and known as gentle giants with children.
Behavior
Grand Gascon-Saintongeois are a rare hound... they actually listen! Smart and obedient, they aim to please their owners and are easy to train. As with most hardworking dogs, it’s important to allow them to stretch their very long legs and have daily exercise opportunities. When these needs are met, Grand Gascon-Saintongeois have a sweet, calm disposition. They love scratches behind their big ears from their family!
Coat
Grand Gascon-Saintongeois have a white coat with black speckles and black ears. Speaking of ears, these dogs have some of the longest hound ears you’ll ever see. They also get dirty pretty easily. Be sure to peek inside regularly to check for signs of infection. It might be a good idea to have a vet-approved solution and cotton balls handy. Other than that, Grand Gascon-Saintongeois are pretty low maintenance when it comes to grooming. A weekly brushing is sure to remove any dead hair from their short coat and reduce shedding.
Lifestyle
Grand Gascon-Saintongeois can live outside in a kennel but crave companionship with their humans. If left alone for too long, they might use their deep, booming voice to call out for you. These hounds can also do well in a home environment with a large backyard. A fence is important, so the sensitive nose on these scenthounds doesn’t cause them to wander. Although they can peer over most children, they are loving and patient companions. A pack animal, they also like to be around other dogs. Small critters, though, are a different story. To these hunting dogs, they look like fun things to chase!
Activity
Grand Gascon-Saintongeois were bred to hunt and work, so it is important that they get their daily exercise. A well-exercised hound is a happy and well-behaved hound! In addition to a hunting partner, they’d love to be your daily running companion. You might even consider strapping on some roller skates so you can keep up with their long legs!
