Behavior
Griffon Bleu de Gascognes are naturally alert and may use their big voices to let you know when someone new is near, but his is not necessarily aggressive behavior. They are not shy dogs and simply want to know who the new person is and if they are going to play with them. As with many hound breeds, Griffon Bleu de Gascognes can be a bit independent, and it may take a few commands before they finally hear you. Starting training as puppies is recommended. Although they may stubborn, you don’t have to ask them twice to scratch behind their ears or give them a belly rub. They love affection – especially from their family!
Coat
Griffon Bleu de Gascognes have a pretty unique look. Black and white speckles cover most of the their long, tousled coat. You’ll usually see their bushy brows and mustache highlighted in tan, which can certainly give them a goofy expression at times! If you can give their shaggy coat a brushing twice a week, you’ll keep them looking as good as ever. It’s also important to take a peek at their droopy hound ears on a regular basis. Their ears do a lot of work in the field and can get dirty pretty easily. If you see or smell anything funky, it might be signs of an ear infection.
Lifestyle
Griffon Bleu de Gascognes love to bounce around a large backyard with their dog buddies. Needless to say, these medium-sized balls of energy are not happy in confined spaces, and they will be sure to tell you - and loudly, at that. These hounds need access to the outdoors on a daily basis. They are a pretty adaptable bunch, so any type of outdoors will do. Griffon Bleu de Gascognes are hunters at heart and might need to be supervised around small critters. These friendly hounds are also very loyal to their family and crave daily human companionship in addition to daily activity.
Activity
Griffon Bleu de Gascognes are nosy dogs, so any activity that utilizes their great sense of smell, like tracking or hunting, will make them content. With boundless energy and endurance, they will happily be your jogging companion, too. It’s always a good idea to give these dogs a backyard to run freely in, though, just in case they have any energy leftover from the day.
