Haldenstover (Halden Hound)

Breed Group: hound
"Speed is my middle name!"
Breed Profile
Originally bred in Norway, Haldenstovers are tireless trackers who are known for their speed and endurance. They are a cross between an English Foxhound and a Beagle and combine the swift with the sweet. These gentle dogs bond closely with their human hunting partner and are loving family members too.

Behavior

Haldenstovers are friendly, happy dogs who love meeting new people. As with most working dogs, Haldenstovers may make a mess of the house or act out in an overall destructive manner if their daily exercise needs are not met. The good news is that a bit more activity and training usually fixes these issues entirely.

Coat

Haldenstovers are head-turners. These good-looking dogs have a short white coat with black markings and a tri-colored face. There is no need to hire professional groomers for these muscular medium-sized dogs, as their beauty routine is pretty minimal. All you really need is a firm bristle brush and some doggie shampoo. Brush weekly and bathe occasionally. You should also check their droopy hound ears regularly for signs of infection.

Lifestyle

From Norway, Haldenstovers adapt well to snowy climates and most settings. Haldenstovers do best with owners who love hunting as much as they do or as part of an active family. These hounds have endurance and require outdoor space to run free. They do not fare well in apartments. Haldenstovers are friendly with dogs and most pets, especially if raised together, but you may see their hunting instincts come out around smaller animals. Early training and socialization can help curb this behavior. Haldenstovers love children, and children love Haldenstovers. Lively and affectionate, they play best with older children who know that tugging on their long hound ears can be hurtful.

Activity

Haldenstovers like to chase, and they sure are fast. So, any activity that combines the two will make these hounds happy. Hunting. Agility. Field trials. Haldenstovers also have a lot of endurance and love to race along with you as you bicycle or rollerblade. A large fenced backyard is helpful, too, in case you haven’t sufficiently tired them out for the day.
