Hellenic Hound

Breed Group: hound
"I'm a pup with pep!"
Breed Profile
Known for their black-and-tan markings and sniffing talents, Hellenic Hounds are the only breed officially recognized from Greece. These medium-sized hounds have stamina and were used to track hare and wild boar, which are five times their size. They are exceptionally cheery dogs and play well with people, children, and other dogs.

Behavior

Does the thought of a dog singing make you cringe or laugh? If you chose the latter, Hellenic Hounds might make a good match. They are very vocal when working or playing… or just expressing how they feel. These hounds will let you know when someone new is approaching or if they sense danger. They may be alert but not aggressive. As with many independent hunting types, consistent training reminds them who is leader of the pack. Full of endurance when hunting and even-tempered when at home, Hellenic Hounds are a happy and well-rounded bunch. Affectionate and loving dogs, they soak up the company of their family.

Coat

These medium-sized scent hounds have a distinctive black-and-tan coat. Grooming for this breed is a breeze. Use a firm bristle brush on a Hellenic Hound’s short coat on a weekly basis to manage dead hairs and reduce shedding. Check their ears regularly for hidden ticks and infections. It is also a good idea to take a peek when Hellenic Hounds return from a long day of hunting or playing in the woods.

Lifestyle

There are many reasons why Hellenic Hounds do best with acreage. Namely, they are a high-energy breed and have a very, very loud voice to match. Simply for the sake of your neighbor’s ears, Hellenic Hounds are not an ideal breed for an urban lifestyle. If their exercise quota hasn’t been filled for the day, they tend to misbehave and act out. By nature, Hellenic Hounds are social dogs and friendly when meeting new people.

Activity

Put the nose of a scent hound to use and you will have a happy dog on your hands. Tracking and hunting are always good activity choices for Hellenic Hounds. If you are not a hunter and are considering this breed, be sure you can dedicate more than two hours per day to exercise. These aren’t “let’s-take-a-quick-loop-around-the-neighborhood” kind of dogs. They require some actual daily aerobic exercise to be content and their happy-go-lucky selves. This is also where a rural setting or large fenced yard comes in handy.
