Ibizan Hound

Breed Group: hound
"Is that my steak on the table?"
Breed Profile
Ibizan Hounds are athletic sighthounds who love their owners. They can jump over tall obstacles, like fences, to gain the freedom they need to join in the chase. Ibizan Hounds are a little shy around new people, but they will show their silly and affectionate side once you get to know them.

Behavior

Ibizan hounds seem proud and sophisticated, but they are also have an affectionate and silly side. They are usually more shy around strangers, but they will bark to let you know someone is coming. Ibizan Hounds were bred to hunt rabbits on their own, so they like to make their own decisions. When training them, remember to use food as a reward and you’ll get much further. Another thing you’ll need to know is that these sighthounds love the chase so much they’ll sometimes try to escape. You’ll need a fence that’s at least six feet tall to prevent them from jumping over it.

Coat

Ibizan Hounds have either a short, smooth coat or a wire-haired coat. They clean themselves often, but you should also brush them once or twice a week to remove dead hair. The wire-haired coat sheds slightly more than the smooth coat, but you can cut back on hair around your house by brushing more often.

Lifestyle

Ibizan Hounds fit best in homes that have a safe yard where they can run around in. They like to have an outdoors space for play, but need to live inside with their families. If you raise an Ibizan hound around cats or small dogs, they can get along, but you should keep an eye on them when they are playing together, and they should never be allowed to play together outside. Ibizan Hounds get along well with children if they’re used to being around them, but otherwise can get scared by a child’s loud noises and play. They’re best with children who are slightly older than with toddlers.

Activity

Ibizan Hounds like to chase. They are naturally athletic and are great competitors in the doggie sports like lure coursing, where they chase a mechanical lure. You should plan to give an Ibizan Hound about a half hour of exercise every day. After they’ve had their daily fun, an Ibizan Hound is more than happy to hang out on something soft for the rest of the day
