"You can always count on me!"
Breed Profile
Karst Shepherd Dogs are guardians that have been herding and protecting flocks for centuries in Slovenia. They also make excellent watchdogs. With the right mix of socialization and training, Karst Shepherd Dogs are good-natured, playful family companions.

Behavior

You can always count on a Karst Shepherd Dog. They’re always there with a watchful eye on their flock and family. These loyal dogs have watchdog qualities but are generally not aggressive. They might need to take a moment, though, to size up new people before fully welcoming them to the group. Karst Shepherd Dogs will take the leadership role if no one else does, but once they know their true pack status in the family, they are sure to be obedient. This is especially true if they have been exposed to training and socialization early on. Karst Shepherd Dogs require some exercise, but not as much as some breeds with herding instincts. When working, these good-natured dogs have a spring in their step and a smile on their face!

Coat

When young, Karst Shepherd Dogs are big balls of fur and look much like the sheep they watch over. Their coat typically becomes a bit darker as they grow older and requires some maintenance. They have a topcoat and an undercoat. You’ll need to brush these sheepdogs every few days to keep their coat looking healthy. This will also reduce shedding and clumps from forming. Bathe only as needed.

Lifestyle

Karst Shepherd Dogs were born to work outside, and that’s where they still prefer to be today. Make sure you have adequate outdoor space for these large guardians to protect, roam, and romp around. They’ll need access to it every day. If raised together, they’ll also enjoy having a dog friend or two.

Activity

The happiest Karst Shepherd Dogs are ones who work. If you don’t live on a farm with livestock for these sheepdogs to watch over, be sure you give these devoted dogs lots of activity. They’ll love to come with you for a daily jog. A couple hours of exercise each day and you’re sure to have a Karst Shepherd Dog with their long tongue hanging out the side of their mouth
