Breed Profile
The Kishu dogs of Japan are quiet and ninja-like hunters who stalk their prey. They are full of activity and love to herd other animals. Originally bred as a working and hunting dogs, they do need you to give them exercise, but they will reward you with their loyalty and love.
Behavior
The Kishu Ken is part instinctive hunting dog, part family pet and are excellent at both. This breed is friendly, calm, and great with children, but they are amazing at hunting as well. Because of their innate hunting instincts, they shouldn't be trusted around small pets like hamsters and guinea pigs. They are strong leaders, though, and will need a firm and authoritative human that will teach them well how to behave around other dogs and children.
Coat
The Kishu generally has a solid color coat, and while they're primarily white, they are also found in red, or sesame. Their coats need to be kept free from matting, so they need to be brushed weekly and bathed as necessary. Once or twice a year, a trip to the groomers is a good idea, as they shed summer and winter coats.
Lifestyle
The Kishu Ken is an active, high energy dog, so having the space to keep up with one is important. Kishus need to be a part of a family, wherever they live, and should not be confined to just the outdoors. A house with a well-fenced in yard is ideal. They are shy around strangers, but don't expect them to bark. Despite their hunting instinct, they can get along with cats but only if they are socialized early on.
Activity
Kishus need to run! They love to herd, and if you can give them a herding job, such as running the kids around the yard, they will be in heaven. These dogs need a long, daily walk or jog and will need to learn how to follow the human on these walks. Training to do this is essential for the Kishu, as well as for you. These dogs need a confident leader at all times.
