Norwegian Buhund
Breed Group: herding
"The perfect mix of pal and protector!"
Breed Profile
As a Nordic breed with boundless energy and an alert nature, the Norwegian Buhund will be your best friend one minute, jogging buddy the next, and faithful watchdog the whole way through. Tie up those shoelaces and buy a good brush before welcoming one of these family-friendly dogs into your home.
Behavior
Norwegian Buhunds are loving, lively, and self-assured. They have an independent side and don’t mind being on their own, but they would pick spending time with the family over being alone any day. Buhunds are active pups that love exercising and playing. They’re also very alert and vocal, making them great watchdogs.
Coat
The Norwegian Buhund has a thick double coat of tan fur. Their coats shed all year round, so keep a brush handy to remove dead hair and make sure your Buhund always looks their best. Buhunds have heavier periods of shedding in spring and fall, so more frequent brushing will be needed to keep their mane under control.
Lifestyle
These dogs are very good with kids and prefer to live indoors with their family. They also get along with cats and dogs if they’re raised together. The Norwegian Buhund is quite high-energy, though, so they should be watched around small children to prevent them from getting too rough. Buhunds are natural watchdogs, so they may be wary of strangers, but they’ll be friendly once they confirm that there’s no danger.
Activity
Norwegian Buhunds are active dogs that need at least an hour of exercise each day. They have endless stamina and love walking, hiking, chasing Frisbees, and playing catch. Buhunds also are skilled at dog sports, like herding, rally, and agility. Once they get enough exercise, though, Buhunds will be perfectly happy snuggling up with you on the couch until the next activity.
