Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen
Breed Group: hound
"Pet me or I'll scream! ... er, BARK!"
Breed Profile
The Petit Basset Griffon is a small, energetic dog with a big dog’s spirit. They are determined hunters who like to do their own thing and use their voices to let you know what’s going on... or to tell you they’re ready for another doggie biscuit.
Behavior
Petit Basset Griffons are outgoing and affectionate toward people and other dogs. When they see a stranger, they’ll bark, but mostly to let you know someone is there and to try to get some attention. They love to hunt and will bolt if they smell or see something that looks fun to chase. Petit Basset Griffons are also known to be diggers, which is something to keep in mind when letting them loose in your backyard.
Coat
Petit Basset Griffons only need a weekly brushing to take care of their coat. This will help remove any dead hairs and reduce the amount of hair you find around your house. They do like to dig and run through the woods, and you’ll need to bathe them whenever they’ve played in something particularly dirty.
Lifestyle
Petit Basset Griffons can fit well in many different types of living situations, but they need to live inside with their people to be happy. They don’t need excess space, but would appreciate access to a securely fenced-in backyard. They get along well with children but can sometimes be a little too excitable around toddlers. When they’re raised together, Petit Basset Griffons can get along with cats, but it’s best to keep an eye on them when together and never let them play together outside where cats can begin to look more like food than friends.
Activity
When it comes to activity, the Petit Basset Griffon says, “Yes Please!” They can become top competitors in lots of doggie sports, like agility, tracking, sand obedience. You should give a Petit Basset Griffon a few twenty-minute play sessions every day to help them get their willies out. A walk, hike, or trip to the dog park are all excellent ways to keep your dog happy and well-behaved.
