Breed Profile
Pharaoh Hounds are athletic dogs with their own agendas, which usually includes lots of lounging around the house and barking at squirrels. These dogs love their owners, but they don't need constant attention. Constant supervision, however, is another matter.
Behavior
Pharaoh Hounds are independent thinkers who love to be lazy. They will bark when something interesting catches their attention or to tell you they are hungry, which is always. Pharaoh Hounds are pros when it comes to stealing your dinner, so you’ll need to keep food well out of reach. They are also prone to digging and can jump over any fence under 8 feet high, so you’ll need to make sure you keep an eye on them when they’re outside on their own. They also love to chase and will bolt after any small furry creature they have the chance to chase.
Coat
Pharaoh Hounds have a short coat that is relatively easy to take care of. They shed very little, and a weekly brushing and polishing with a chamois cloth is all they need to look their best.
Lifestyle
Pharaoh Hounds are thin and have a short coat, so they need to live inside with access to a soft place to plop down and spend the day. They get along very well with children but can be a little too much for a wobbly toddler to handle. Pharaoh Hounds can learn to play nice with cats if they are raised together, but it’s always best to keep an eye on them when they’re together, and never let them play outside at the same time.
Activity
Although they are prone to laziness, Pharaoh Hounds are excellent athletes. They are naturally talented at the doggie sports of lure coursing and agility. Pharaoh Hounds also relish daily walks and the opportunity to run freely at a dog park or your securely fenced-in backyard. They are capable of jumping over any fence under 8 feet tall, so make sure they are well-secured in any yard!
