Breed Profile
Podenco Carios are rare hunting dogs that can be found in the Canary islands. It is thought that the Egyptians brought these tough hunting dogs with them to sniff out wild game. The Podenco Canario is known to be high-strung, but they do love their families and are extremely loyal.
Behavior
The Podenco Canario sees and hears everything that happens around them. They are said to be nervy and may seem agitated at times. It may seem like your Podenco Canario is always on a permanent coffee rush, as they are highly in tune to everything that’s happening around them. Sometimes they can be a little aggressive toward strangers, but with early socialization around people, this is usually not a problem.
Coat
The short, smooth, dense coat of the Podenco Canario is very easy to maintain. They don’t require much grooming at all, but it’s best to give them a brushing about once a week to help remove dead hairs.
Lifestyle
Dogs like the Podenco Canario need to live in situations where they have easy access to a safe place to play. A fenced-in yard is ideal if you want to own a Podenco Canario. These dogs aren’t best suited for life with young, clumsy toddlers, but they do alright with older, more respectful children. They can also learn to live with other canines if they are raised together but don’t always share space will with kitties or other pets.
Activity
Podenco Canarios have a high amount of energy. They love to hunt and are happiest when they are hot on the trail of a rabbit or other small, furry critter. You’ll want to take them for daily walks or jogs, but be sure to keep a firm grip on the leash. Podenco Canarios notice everything around them and will chase after the first scent they smells or interesting animal it sees.
