Breed Profile
The Porcelaine is a French scenthound who is a fierce hunter and a passionate friend. They don’t always listen to everything you say, but they love their families. In fact, family is so important to a Porcelaine that they don’t do well when left alone for too long. This breed requires lots of attention, patience, and strong leadership.
Behavior
Hunting is the one thing that’s always on the mind of a Porcelaine. They live for the chase and will always want to follow their noses. Another thing the Porcelaine is famous for is their voice. Their bark sounds like they are singing, and boy, do they like to sing! The Porcelaine is likely to bark when strangers approach, but they are usually not aggressive toward people. They do love their human families, though, so be sure to show this lovely breed a lot of love in return.
Coat
Porcelaines have a very short, glossy-white coat, much like a smooth white porcelain figure. The difference is that their coats are easy to care for (and not so fragile!). Their coat naturally cleans itself, and they only need a brushing about once a week or every other week.
Lifestyle
Like most other hunting dogs, the Porcelaine does not tend to do well in apartments. They prefer a rural home with a safe place to play and lots of room to roam. Porcelaines also don’t like being left alone for long periods of time, so they need an owner who will allow them to live inside and who will devote plenty of time to their dog. Porcelaines get along wonderfully with other dogs and with children but should be supervised around cats or other non-canine pets.
Activity
A Porcelaine needs lots of daily exercise. Their favorite way to burn off energy is to go hunting. These dogs will hunt tenaciously all day, following their nose wherever it takes them. If you don’t hunt, take them for hikes and daily walks or jogs. A well-exercised Porcelaine will behave much better than one who is bored or neglected.
