Silken Windhound

Silken Windhounds are very kind and affectionate. They make wonderful family dogs and love being part of the “pack,” whether it’s a group of animals or humans. Windhounds also are quite smart and catch on quickly, especially when you show praise and affection in return. They tend to be on the quiet side, particularly if they need to sneak up on prey.

Silken Windhounds get part of their name from their gorgeous, silky coats. Their fur comes in a variety of colors, including cream, red, fawn, black, silver, and white. Windhounds may have long coats, but they’re easy to maintain. Brush them a few times each week, and give them a bath every couple of months to keep their fur looking and feeling its best.

These dogs tend to be good with kids and other dogs, but they need training and socialization to learn right from wrong. Their prey drive can be dangerous around cats and small animals, so make sure other pets are larger and don’t become their target. Silken Windhounds can be happy in a house or apartment setting. Although they love running outside, this breed prefers to live indoors, where they can have a comfy spot to sleep and be around the people they love.

Silken Windhounds have plenty of energy to spare, but like Greyhounds, they prefer short bursts of activity instead of endurance exercises. These pups like to sprint and have a strong prey drive, so chasing is one of their favorite games. Windhounds also like walks and playing at dog parks, where they can chase other dogs and be part of a pack.
