Skye Terrier

Breed Group: terrier
"You can’t help but smile when you see me!"
Breed Profile
Skye Terriers are known for their long, flowy hair and easygoing personalities. They bond quickly with their families but are cautious around strangers and other pets. If you love terriers but could do without their high maintenance grooming and exercise needs, the Skye might be the perfect pup for you.

Behavior

Skye Terriers are an affectionate and loyal breed. Their cautiousness and alertness make them good watchdogs, but these little furballs aren’t likely to scare anyone. Skyes are very friendly toward people they know but tend to be reserved around strangers. They size up new people before deciding how to react, but once they’re your friend, you have a companion for life. These dogs don’t need much activity, but they’re known to bark and dig when they get bored.

Coat

Skye Terriers have a double-layered coat. The top layer is straight and long, while the bottom layer is short, wooly, and thick. Skyes can be found in black, gray, or brown and blond with dark markings on the ears, muzzle, and tail. Unlike most terriers or dogs with long coats, Skyes are relatively easy to groom and don’t shed much. Unless your Skye is a show dog, all they will need is a weekly brushing. No trimming or stripping is necessary.

Lifestyle

Skye Terriers are good companions for children, but they don’t get along very well with other dogs or cats. They can also be hard to train, which could make it difficult to socialize them or correct bad habits. This breed doesn’t like being alone for long periods of time and won’t be content as backyard dogs. If a Skye gets lonely or bored, they're likely to act out and be destructive. Instead, keep these dogs primarily inside your home or apartment, where they can be around people while maintaining their independence.

Activity

Skye Terriers may look petite and easygoing, but they have a surprising amount of strength and stamina. They love sports like agility and tracking, but they’re also perfectly happy to lie on the couch all day. A few 10-15 minute walks or play sessions each day will satisfy their needs.
