"I'm a laid-back hound!"
Breed Profile
Smaland Hounds are hardy, hardworking Swedish small game hunters who don't let anything stand in the way of them doing their job. They also won’t let anything get between them and their families. Devoted and protective, Smaland Hounds are always a welcomed family addition!

Behavior

Smaland Hounds develop strong ties with their family pack. They are naturally protective and will be suspicious toward strangers. Although they are not necessarily aggressive, be sure to train and socialize these dogs as youngsters, so they don’t become overly territorial. Smaland Hounds generally aim to please, but sometimes they have selective hearing when on a scent trail. Overall, these smart dogs strike a unique balance between being relentless hunters and relaxed family companions!

Coat

Smaland Hounds have a protective black-and-tan double coat, making it easy to weather any conditions while hunting. Brush these hounds weekly to reduce shedding. They only need to be bathed a few times a year, unless they’ve really gotten into something while chasing a rabbit down a hole.

Lifestyle

Smaland Hounds have a sweet disposition but require adequate exercise to be happy and healthy. Give these dogs land to roam or a large backyard, and they will be in heaven. Smaland Hounds will enjoy being gentle playmates for children and will accept other four-legged friends if raised together.

Activity

In addition to extensive hunting expeditions, Smaland Hounds are happy to accompany you on a long run or arduous hike. They will not only exert any pent-up energy but will also enjoy exploring with their favorite people. You should expect to carve out one to two hours each day for exercising your Smaland Hound.
