"I’m always keeping an eye out – even beneath all this hair!"
Breed Profile
South Russian Shepherd Dogs are big, fluffy sheepdogs and livestock guardians. They are watchful over their family and territory. Covered by thick, wooly hair, South Russian Shepherd Dogs are big softies with adults and children alike.

Behavior

South Russian Shepherd Dogs develop deep bonds with their family and work hard to keep them safe and sound. They become very attached to their people and property and do not like change. If you decide to bring one of these sweet sheepdogs home, it’s important that you commit to owning them wholeheartedly. If you do, they will reward you with unwavering loyalty and devotion. South Russian Shepherd Dogs are suspicious of strangers and can become very defensive. They think for themselves… and sometimes try to think for you too. In addition to being a strong leader as an owner, early training and socialization is important with these pups.

Coat

South Russian Shepherd Dogs are known for their beautiful, long, wooly coat. The dense double coat protects them from all kinds of extreme weather elements. The undercoat does shed, especially when the seasons change. You might need two different types of brushes for these dogs. It is recommended to brush every few days to prevent matting, reduce shedding, and rid the coat of any leaves or twigs that might be hiding. When bathing, pay close attention to their beards, as they can get dirty and stained. South Russian Shepherd Dogs can benefit from occasional professional grooming.

Lifestyle

South Russian Shepherd Dogs can be strong-willed and do best with experienced dog owners. This breed will appreciate room to roam; these lively, large dogs aren’t a fit for apartments… literally. If not in a rural area, they will make good use of a large fenced-in backyard. They thrive in the outdoors and can withstand frigid temperatures. South Russian Shepherd Dogs will consider most other dogs and pets as part of their pack if raised together, but they can show dominance toward new pups, so adequate socializing is recommended. South Russian Shepherd Dogs love to be with their families and make a big, soft companion for kids!

Activity

South Russian Shepherd Dogs should fulfill their exercise needs naturally if actively working on a farm as a livestock guardian. As family pets, they’ll need access to the outdoors and some daily rigorous activity. South Russian Shepherd Dogs will be all smiles if you take them on a daily jog!
