"I never give up!"
Breed Profile
Styrian Coarse Haired Hounds are a recently introduced breed. These scenthounds work in some of the toughest terrain in Austria, but nothing will stand in their way of finding the rabbit or hare they’re trailing. Styrian Coarse Haired Hounds have made their way into families and make loyal pets!

Behavior

Styrian Coarse Haired Hounds are serious and quiet when focused on a scent, but when they find something, they will use their loud voices to let you know! And if you haven’t heard anything yet, well, you will soon, because these medium-sized dogs will not stop without finding what they’re after. They will track for hours. Without food or drink. Rain or shine. Needless to say, they are a determined bunch! Styrian Coarse Haired Hounds should be socialized and trained starting as puppies. They are both stubborn and suspicious of strangers. Showcasing leadership as an owner also makes this dog more relaxed, balanced, and willing. These hounds might become closest with this leader – especially if the person is also their hunting partner – but will be friendly and good-natured toward the whole family. When sufficiently tired out, they are actually surprisingly calm inside the house.

Coat

Styrian Coarse Haired Hounds have a wiry coat that’s easy to maintain. Weekly brushing is enough to keep their fur looking good. You may need to do so more often if the dog has been out on an adventure. Always be careful over-bathing dogs with weather-resistant coats, as it can strip much-needed oils.

Lifestyle

Styrian Coarse Haired Hounds are happiest as hunting companions. They appreciate space and make good use of a large backyard. When socialized, these hounds can be receptive to little ones and friendly toward dog friends, especially if they’ve been raised as a pack. Small furry pets should be kept separate from Styrian Coarse Haired Hounds. The temptation to chase can be too strong for these pups!

Activity

Hunting. Hunting. Hunting. This is what goes through the minds of Styrian Coarse Haired Hounds. It’s when they’re at their best, but if you’re not a hunter, try bringing them along on a long, daily run to exhaust their energy!
