Breed Profile
The Thai Ridgeback is an independent dog originally bred to hunt wild game and vermin. They like to do things their own way and are a difficult breed for first-time dog owners. However, they do love their owners and will protect you from danger in the event of a threat.

Behavior

Thai Ridgebacks are assertive and confident and will test you and everyone in your family to see just how far they can push you. Thai Ridgebacks are not known for their listening skills and will always put their own spin on everything. They may choose one family member as their favorite but will grow attached to everyone they are raised with. Thai Ridgebacks are protective of their families and can be wary of new situations and new people. It’s important to socialize them and expose them to new experiences when they are young.

Coat

Thai Ridgebacks have a classic ridge down their backs, which runs down the length of their whole back. They come in four rich, solid colors - red, fawn, black, or blue. Thai Ridgebacks have a short coat, and a weekly brushing is all that is needed to cut back on their mild shedding.

Lifestyle

Thai Ridgebacks can adapt to many different living situations, but they do need human companionship. It’s best if your dog is able to come inside and be with you when you’re home but can also spend time outdoors. Thai Ridgebacks are not well-suited to life with cats or small children. but they get along well with older, more respectful children, especially if they are raised together.

Activity

Thai Ridgebacks need multiple opportunities for exercise every day. Long walks or hikes are good ways to help them burn off some of their large supply of energy. It’s important to walk them on a leash, as they are prone to chasing anything small and furry. If you’re interested in competitions, they are also good competitors in the doggie sport of lure coursing, a sport where dogs chase a mechanical lure.
