Breed Profile
Don’t be deceived: unlike their name suggests, these dogs aren’t terriers at all. Rather, Tibetan Terriers are high-energy family pups whose favorite day involves a mix of people, exercise, and mischief. They may be high maintenance with grooming and activity, but their sweet, mild-mannered personalities make up for it.
Behavior
Tibetan Terriers are brave, smart, noble, and loyal. They’re easygoing, which makes them great companions for kids, adults, and other animals. These dogs love being on watch and alerting you when they seem something interesting. Their curiosity can sometimes be their downfall , however, as they’re known to get into things and find the one hole in your fence if given the chance.
Coat
This breed has a long, fine topcoat of either straight or wavy hair. The undercoat is wooly and dense. Tibetan Terriers need a good groomer to keep their coats in tip-top shape. Plan on brushing them once or twice a week to remove mats and tangles, and bathe them more often than you would most dogs (up to twice each month).
Lifestyle
Tibetan Terriers are simple dogs that get along with just about anyone. They may need training and socialization to teach them not to dominate, but once they know right from wrong, they should be good companions to everyone in the house. They’re content in a home or apartment setting and also make great travel buddies. Although their coats can resist the elements, Tibetan Terriers should be primarily indoor dogs so they get enough human contact.
Activity
The Tibetan Terrier is a high-energy dog that loves to play and exercise. They enjoy walking, running, or hiking, as well as dog sports. These pups are particularly good at playing catch and agility games. Tibetan Terriers crave companionship, so they won’t mind any activity as long as you’re involved.
