Tyrolean Hound
Breed Group: sporting
"I'll be your companion and your compass!"
Breed Profile
Tyrolean Hounds are a unique combination of hunter, compass, and companion. They are rarely seen scenthounds from Austria known for their ability to track wounded game. Tyrolean Hounds may be hardworking and stubborn, but they’re also loving hounds who enjoy their family and home life!
Behavior
It takes a very smart dog to work on their own and know exactly where they are at all times, but this description is just another day in the life of a Tyrolean Hound. They are efficient in the fields and easygoing with their families. Upbeat, outgoing, and affectionate are a few ways to describe these hounds when they're not on the trail. Tyrolean Hounds are hounds, however, and you can expect to be met with stubborn stares when they don’t feel like doing something. As long as you’re firm and consistent with these intelligent dogs, they will listen in time.
Coat
A Tyrolean Hound’s short-haired coat comes in many different colors: red, black and tan, or tri-color. Weekly brushing should be enough to remove any dead hair from their dense undercoat. Regular maintenance reduces shedding. Bathe as needed. (With these hunters, you’re sure to know when they need one!)
Lifestyle
Tyrolean Hounds are a good match for hunters, outdoorsy people, and active families. Well-socialized Tyrolean Hounds also make good-natured companions for children and other dogs. These hounds are happiest with access to land or a large backyard. Needless to say, they like their space, which doesn’t make them a good fit for apartment-style living.
Activity
Tyrolean Hounds have quite a bit of endurance when working, but when they’re not, they will need to use up this excess energy in other ways to stay well-behaved. These hounds will happily join you for a long walk, mountainous hike, or trail run.
