Welsh Springer Spaniel
Breed Group: sporting
"I'm next to your feet... Don't step on me!"
Breed Profile
Welsh Springer Spaniels are devoted hunting dogs who love their owners. Their specialty is retrieving and flushing game, which they do with great joy on land or in water. Welsh Springer Spaniels are loving and protective and almost always want to be right by your side.
Behavior
Welsh Springer Spaniels want to be near you at all times, unless they are hunting and chasing birds. Even when hunting, they are not prone to wandering too far away. Welsh Springer Spaniels are loving and protective of their owners but can take a little while to warm up to strangers. They will definitely let you know if someone they don’t know is approaching you! Welsh Springer Spaniels are very sensitive but can also be stubborn. This combination requires a patient, gentle approach to training them.
Coat
Welsh Springer Spaniels have a gorgeous red and white coat with feathering along their chest, underside, and legs. You’ll want to brush their coat at least twice a week and after every time they’ve gone hunting. These bushings will help prevent matting and tangling, as well as cut down on the amount of hair you find on your furniture.
Lifestyle
Welsh Springer Spaniels are happiest in situations where they have a large space to play but can come back inside afterward. They are people-loving dogs who don’t do well living outdoors permanently. Welsh Springer Spaniels have a gentle nature and get along well with children and other pets, especially if they are raised around them.
Activity
Welsh Springer Spaniels are natural born hunters with a keen sense of smell. They will always enjoy a good hunt and will follow their noses wherever they take them. Non-hunting families can keep a Welsh Springer Spaniel occupied by taking them out for walks or getting them involved in doggie athletics. You’ll want to plan on giving them about an hour of exercise every day to keep them happy and healthy.
